REVIVING THE RESIDUE, URBAN INSERTS

REVIVING THE RESIDUE - URBAN INSERTS
EL QOBBEH DISTRICT - TRIPOLI - NORTH GOVERNORATE - LEBANON

Graduation project done to earn a Master's degree in Architecture - Academic year 2021
THE PROJECT is inspired from the thesis which seeks to explore the potential of neglected urban spaces to spark economic development in dense neighborhoods and their capability of transforming the surrounding environment into a vibrant, social, and active whole. Within the context of residential neighborhoods with historic urban cores, the city of Tripoli, Lebanon, is the main case study where interstitial spaces have been marginalized in the urban fabric.
Starting out with Zone 01 which consists of the rehabilitation of the "Rahbat school".
The main purpose of rehabilitation is to reclaim back the function of the abandoned school with an innovative / interactive program for the users.
In addition to enhancing the relation between the building and the surrounding environment
The main reason behind installing the "Axis of Colors" is to maintain a generous link between two public areas that were once unoccupied and neglected by the surrounding.
Thus turning two segregated areas into a one open whole for the inhabitants to benefit from.
The intervention highly considered the adaptive re-use of abandoned buildings found in the surrounding. The proposed program focused on enhancing co-working spaces and development offices to help maintain the constant progress and sustainability of the area.
Moving on to the 3rd intervention which consists of the expansion of an old olive oil press that was on the verge of being neglected, forgotten, and left behind.
The extended element in the press focuses on nourishing back the industry by providing a showroom for people to come, visit, and explore the potential found in such a small place.
Reaching the final intervention in Zone C, which focuses and reusing an abandoned rooftop as a garden for the inhabitants.
In addition to shedding the light on the precious stairs found in this historical context and the importance of reclaiming them back to the people.
THANK YOU
